Rwanda’s demand for Wheat is estimated at least 50,000 MT / Year.

  • The total pasta consumed is imported, the local market demand exceed 400 MT per month
  • Rwandan import expenditure: US$ 13M per year
  • By 2017, the demand will be ≈ 186,261 MT
  • Possible to exceed the demand by 2017 if the productivity is raised at least at 4 Tons / ha on a total area of 62,862 ha.

RWANDA’S Advantages
  • In Rwanda Wheat is cultivated in Congo-Nile Crest, Volcanic soils and Buberuka highlands at altitudes ≥ 1900m (11 districts: Burera, Musanze, Nyabihu, Rulindo, Gakenke, Gicumbi, Karongi, Ngororero, Rutsiro, Nyamagabe & Nyaruguru).
  • In the past 5 years, the production increased 4.6 - fold (24,633 tons / 2007 to 114,075 tons / 2011), annual growth of 33.2%. Average yield: 2.1 T / 3 Tons / ha (Farmers Vs Rwerere station).
  • Rwanda is among 12 countries with the highest projected average mean yield for rain fed spring wheat production world wide and first in Africa.
  • In the last 5 years (2006 – 2010) Rwanda recorded the first annual growth both in production and yield (38.3% vs. 18.6%) in the region.
Existing investors
  • BAHKRESA GRAIN MILLING RWANDA Ltd (BGM) produces 250 MT per day, demand : 84,000MT (2013) 40% of the produce are exported.
  • Pembe Flour mills Limited is a Kenyan Wheat processing company registered in 2006 with the crushing capacity of 200 MT per day, demand : 65,000MT (2013).
  • SOTIRU, oldest Rwandan wheat milling plant with a processing capacity of 47 MT / day. It is looking for a potential investor to partner with.
  • Mikoani Traders is in implementation phase at Kigali Special Economic Zone with 200 – 250 MT / day
